Me and My Kiddos

So I've mentioned in the beginning of the semester that I am a soccer coach. As a recap, I'll repeat that I work for a franchise called Soccer Shots, and it's a non-competitive soccer program in which I teach kids the very basic fundamentals of soccer. I started coaching in December 2019, and it's probably one of the best things I look forward to all the time. I get to work with the kids and teach them about my favorite sport, and I'm getting paid to do it (lol). But seriously speaking, I genuinely love interacting with kids because of their wild imagination and the pure joy they have every time I see them.

There are three age groups that I coach, each having a fun name along with different levels of learning. Each age groups interacts with me so differently and uniquely, and I just find that so interesting. The first age group is the "Mini's" (2-3yrs). Now I know that seems a little young to start a sport, and the common thought is that they really don't know what is going on; but throughout my time coaching, I can definitely say that those kids know more than we think. It's so cute to see they learn how to kick the ball and run around. this age groups definitely brings me the most joy.

The next level up are the "Classics" (3-4yrs). These kids are now slightly older, and I like this group because of the hilarious stories they always tell me. In this group, I teach them actual soccer moves, but I tier it down to their level. We also play actual soccer games here and there, but we mostly focus on our skills. I compare this group to basically a preschool group, but all they learn is soccer.

Lastly, I have the "Premier" group (5-7yrs). Competitive-wise, these kids are the best. Because of them being slightly older, they're able to grasp the concept of the game of soccer, and they move at a faster pace. It reminds me of when I first started playing soccer, and it makes me so happy to know that I'm passing my love f the sport down to them. On top of learning multiple skills at a time, we also play a game of soccer at the end of each class. It's so funny seeing what they do and how they act when they're in the zone and playing the game.

While I know I won't be able to teach forever, these kids bring me so much joy right now, and that is exactly what I need currently. So I'm going to enjoy the time I have with it right now, and I'm forever grateful for becoming a role model for the kiddos!

  1. Sofia, that is great that you are able to do something that you enjoy for a job! Unfortunately not everyone gets such an opportunity. I enjoyed playing soccer for a number of years through grade school but I must admit that I was surprised to hear how young they started!
