"What is something you'd like to experience, but don't think you ever will?" I want to experience the celebration of Día de los Muertos in Mexico. It's just a beautiful celebration, with an even more beautiful meaning. I hope to one day experience it with my favorite people, so that they too can see the beauty in this part of Mexican culture. To provide some background, Día de los Muertos is a two-day holiday that honor our beloved that have passed away, and this day essentially reunites the living and the dead. It's a day to celebrate your passed-on loved ones, and remember all the good they have done. One tradition on this holiday is the creation of an "Ofrenda". Translating to "offerings", this is an altar created by family to set up pictures and treats for their late families. These altars also include Marigold flowers, and the purpose of these altars are to encourage visits from the land of the dead. Another ubiquitous tradition of D...

My Life Before COVID-19

Image
It's kind of hard to remember, isn't it? Life before a worldwide pandemic...what were you doing then? For me, everything stopped so abruptly. It all came to a halt, and it left me with the thought, "what happens next?" During the time, I was in what I consider the main part of senior year. Second semester, just starting track season, figuring what prom dress I want, and squaring away the final touches on college. Since all of you know me only through college, let me take you back to before college, and most importantly before covid: February 24, 2020:  This was a great day, so let me provide some background information: my friend in the middle is a very good runner, and she somehow convinced me to do track and field. Now being a soccer player, it wasn't that big of a deal. But let me tell you, running in soccer is very very different that running in track and field. Anyways, on this day we went to Wabash College to run in a track and field showcase. This was my f...

Social Media and Society: It Controls Everything

Image
By definition, society is refers to "a group of people who live in a definable community and share the same culture". Personally, I don't agree with the 'same culture aspect' of the definition, but the rest of it I agree with. One thing about society is that it constantly changes, and it changes more times than we see. Big or small, constant changes to society are always made, and it's influenced by the world around us. Essentially, society controls the way we think and do things. I like to think of it as a pair of eyes that are silently watching. In ways, society can be good; it can promote positive change and redirect our way of thinking. However, society can also alter are ways of life by distorting truths and living ways of life that are taught to be good, but actually aren't. Social media is also a gigantic influencer of societies.  Think about it: social media is shared to everyone. It's a way to spread messages to mass populations. It's a w...

Journal Entry #1

"What did I know to be true that I didn't know a year ago?" This question really took me by surprise because of how real it is. One thing that I now know to be true: everything about you is going to change one day, whether you like it or not. Now, this sounds kind of bad, but I think it's because society has kind of put a bad rep to it. The way I look at it is...yes, it's going to happen, but it's up to you how you handle it. I can definitely say that I am not the person I was around this time one year ago, let alone even two days ago. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not a big fan of change. I'm all about my comfort zone and familiarity. But once I graduated high school, I had this thought in the back of my head that things are gonna change, and it's gonna change really fast. I can honestly say now that I like this change because of the people that it lead me to, the events that happened because of it, and the person that I molded into. You are goi...

The Little Things I Saw Today

Today was a pretty nice day. Friday, October 1st; first day of the month and 30 more days until Halloween. I had no school today, which is always nice because it gives me time to do things that aren't school-related. I'll give a synopsis of my day:  I woke up at 7:30 this morning, went on a quick walk with my dogs, and then I got ready and went to work at 8:30. Today was a short day, so I got out at about 10:30. After work I drove to Panera to meet up with one of my friends to study. Now, did we get some studying done? We actually did! We studied for a few hours, and then I had to head home to get my sister from school. Now for my sister, every Friday I take her to Chick-fil-a as a treat for the school week. She does awesome in school, so she absolutely deserves it! So we went to the new one and Schererville, and then we came home and were surprised by my grandparents! They came to see us and we had a nice little visit. After they left I did some more homework and relaxed for...
